Art and myth in primitive cultures Conference

The Association of Friends of the Barbier-Mueller Pre-Columbian Art Museum and the University Institute of Culture of the Pompeu Fabra University organise for the third year in a row the Art and myth in primitive cultures Conference, with the aim on this occasion of reflecting on the primitive cultures in two areas of the American continent: Amazonia and the north- eastern coast of North America.

11:00am: Inauguration given by Ms Estela Ocampo, Director of the University Institute of Culture of the Pompeu Fabra University, and Ms Lola Mitjans, President of the Association of Friends of the Barbier-Mueller Pre-Columbian Art Museum.

11:15am-1:00pm: Art and myth in the Amazon cultures. Talk given by Anne-Christine Taylor, Director of Research and Education at the Musée du quai Branly, in which she has also been responsible for research in American Indian ethnography. Furthermore, Ms Taylor was Associate Scholar at the Centre for Latin American Studies at the University of Cambridge and for more than two years carried out field and archive work in Ecuador. She has published numerous articles and various books about the Amazon cultures, including “To the East of the Andes. Relations between the Andes and Amazon cultures, 15th to 17th century and the Conquest of the Jívero Region (1550-1650). Documental, studies and compilation.

5.00pm – 7.00pm: Art and myth in the cultures of the north-eastern coast of North America. Talk given by Jonathan C. King, responsible for the department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas of the British Museum. He is external member of the Board of Research of the British Library and of the Royal Anthropological Institute of London. Mr King has published various books about the North American cultures, among which include First Peoples, First contacts: Native Peoples of North America.
