Art and Myth: the Great Aztec Temple Tenochtitlan and its meanings

The Barbier-Mueller Pre-Columbian Art Museum of Barcelona and the University Institute of Culture of the Pompeu Fabra University are organising for the fourth consecutive year the conference Art and Myth, that on this occasion reflects on the Aztec culture and the latest archaeological finds in Mexico.

The talks will be given by Eduardo Matos Moctezuma, director of the National School of Anthropology and History between1971 and 1973 and secretary of the Mexican Society of Anthropology between 1971 and 1976, in which he also held the position of president of the Council of Archaeology. Matos Moctezuma was director of the National Museum of Anthropology from 1986 to 1987, as well as director and founder of the Museum of the Great Temple from 1987 to 2000. Since 1987 he has directed the Project of Urban Archaeology, whose aim is to investigate and carry out excavations in various points of the historic centre of Mexico City, next to the archaeological site.

PROGRAMME

  • 9th March

7.00pm:

Inauguration by Dr. Estela Ocampo, director of the University Institute of the Pompeu Fabra University and Ms. Lola Mitjans, president of the Association of Friends of the Barbier-Mueller Pre-Columbian Museum.

7.15- 8.00pm:

The city of Tenochtitlan. A general overview will be given of the Mexican or Aztec people based on the foundation of its city of Tenochtitlan, the way in which they developed their lives from birth until death and the place awaiting them after their death.

  • 10th March

11:00 – 11:45am:

The Great Temple of the Aztecs. We will talk about the symbolism of the main Aztec temple, known as the Great Temple, and about the excavations that discovered it, as well as the large amount of offering deposited there.

7.00 to 7.45pm:

Recent findings in the Great Temple. We will comment about recent findings made in the Great Aztec Temple and their characteristics. We will also mention the case of the enormous mortuary tombstone in front of this building and its mythical importance.

At the end of the conference an attendance certificate will be given. You should request it beforehand from the IUC.
